Have you ever walked down the spice isle at the store and been overwhelmed by the number of seasonings?  Don’t worry, I’ve been there too and know how you feel.

After trying many different kinds and not loving them I decided it was time to make my own BBQ rub from scratch.  And the result?  Let me just say you won’t ever buy a store bought version again.

You can make your own BBQ rub from scratch in less time than it would take to get down your driveway using ingredients you probably already have at home.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Uses simple pantry staples.
  • Easy to make in less than 5 minutes.
  • Works great on beef, pork, chicken, fish, and so much more!

How To Make This BBQ Rub

To make this BBQ rub, all you need to do is combine the ingredients into a bowl or jar and whisk them together.  Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • Brown Sugar – adds just the right amount of sweetness to the rub.
  • Salt – brings out the natural flavor of the food.
  • Black Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Cumin
  • Ground Mustard
  • Ground Cayenne – adds just the right amount of spice without being overwhelming.

How To Use This BBQ Rub

Once all of the ingredients are whisked together you are ready to use it on any type of meat you prefer. Simply sprinkle a generous amount onto the meat and massage it so the rub absorbs into the meat and doesn’t fall off when you cook it.  Repeat this step until each piece is completely covered with the BBQ rub.

You can use this rub on just about any kind of meat, here are a few of my favorites:

  • Chicken
  • Steak
  • Pork
  • Burgers
  • Fish

All of the ingredients for the rub combined on a white plate with a spoon scooping some out.

Tips

  • Want to add extra flavor?  Use smoked paprika instead of regular paprika and freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Don’t like spicy food?  Simply leave out the ground cayenne.
  • Want even more spice? You can easily double the ground cayenne or substitute your favorite ground chile.
  • Want more texture?  Use chopped dried onions, dried minced garlic, coarse salt, and/or coarse sugar.
