This easy Coleslaw Recipe will be a great addition to your next cookout or gathering. Made with a package of coleslaw and a quick homemade dressing, this is a quick side that will compliment any main course.

A spoonful of coleslaw being taken out of a small bowl filled with the delicious cabbage salad.

When it comes time to make sides for a cookout I would bet that coleslaw is one of the first ones that comes to your mind. No matter what you are grilling coleslaw is one side that goes with anything.

What is coleslaw you may be asking? Well, simply put, it’s a cabbage salad. There are many different varieties but this recipe is the quint essential coleslaw that you will see at most cookouts or restaurants you go to.

The ingredients needed to make coleslaw, mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt, pepper, and coleslaw laid out in glass bowls on a dark gray surface.

Ingredients For This Recipe

Making this homemade coleslaw recipe is so easy it will become your go to when you need a delicious side for your next BBQ. The ingredients you will need are:

  • Bag of Coleslaw: This should be around the other bagged salad in your store. There are a few different kinds you may find. Some will just be regular green cabbage, others will have shredded carrots mixed in like the one I used, and then you may find a mix that has red cabbage mixed in as well. No matter which type you choose, they will all taste delicious.
  • Mayonnaise: I like to use mayonnaise with olive oil in it but any type will work.
  • Sugar: Regular granulated sugar works best in this recipe.
  • Distilled White Vinegar: Helps to accentuate the other flavors and give it just the right amount of tang.
  • Salt & Pepper

How To Make Coleslaw

To make coleslaw, you will start by mixing up the dressing. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Whisk them together until everything is well combined. Next, grab your bag of coleslaw and pour it into the same bowl you used to make the dressing. You will want to make sure to get a big enough bowl so you don’t make a mess when mixing everything together.

Once the coleslaw is in the bowl, simply toss everything together until all of the cabbage is completely covered. This should only take a minute or two. If you haven’t had coleslaw before or don’t like yours very ‘saucy’ I would suggest starting with about half of the dressing and tossing it together then slowly adding more if you like.

That’s it! Super simple right? Once everything is mixed together it’s ready to serve. While it will taste delicious at this point, I would recommend letting it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let all of the flavors meld together. This would even be a great dish to make the night before to save time the day of your cookout or party.

Cooking Tips

  • If you don’t want your coleslaw to be as ‘saucy’, start by adding 1/2 to 3/4 of the dressing and mix it up until you get it just how you like it.
  • Finely shredded or chopped cabbage will both work great for this recipe. You could even shred your own if you would like, just make sure it’s cut into thin pieces so it’s easy to mix and eat.
  • Try adding a teaspoon of our BBQ Rub into the coleslaw to add another layer of flavor.
  • Don’t like cabbage? Try this Broccoli Salad recipe which uses the same wet ingredients to make a light and flavorful side dish.
  • If you like a crisp coleslaw, prepare this dish and serve right away.  If you prefer a softer, more tender coleslaw, prepare ahead of time and allow it to sit in the refrigerator for 3 hours.
